ESWT (Extracorporeal shockwave therapy) is a relatively new treatment option that has emerged for patients with chronic tendon/connective tissue pain. The shock waves are abrupt, high amplitude pulses of mechanical energy, similar to soundwaves. Extracorporeal shockwave therapy focuses shockwaves onto and into the body and is currently being used to treat a wide range of conditions, including:
• Plantar fasciitis
• Calcific tendonitis
• Tennis/Golfer’s elbow
• Achilles tendinopathy
The effectiveness of the treatment modality for specific conditions has been reviewed and accepted by NICE (UK National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence). Shockwave therapy causes microtrauma to the tissue causing the chronic problems, initiating a healing response from the body.
This healing response causes blood vessels to form and nutrients to be delivered to the area affected by the treatment. In basic terms, the shockwaves cause microtrauma, which stimulate the body’s repair functions, relieving pain. Shockwave therapy can be really useful in enabling earlier return to sport for athletes.
Shockwave therapy is non-invasive. It’s not a surgical option, so it doesn’t require any cutting and it isn’t a medical pill or injection, which can have side effects. The chronic issues that the therapy treats are difficult to treat any other way and surgery carries the risk of complications, such as infection or further pain.
Treatment can take as little as 10 minutes, usually once or twice per week for 4 – 8 sessions in total, depending on the condition being treated. Using shockwave therapy has little complications that we know of. Contact us today if you would like to find out more.
